Earthquake Workshop Speech by IMM President Ekrem İMAMOĞLU

The “Istanbul Earthquake Workshop” was held on 2-3 December 2019 at the Istanbul Congress Center in order to make Istanbul a disaster-resilient city with the partipation of approximately 650 national and international experts/researchers and corporate representatives. The effects of a anticipated Istanbul earthquake were discussed in detail with potential precautions, started with the opening speech of IMM President Ekrem İmamoğlu and was carried out with the participation of approximately 1200 people from 174 different institutions, including IMM’s administrators on earthquake and urban transformation, national and international academics, relevant ministries, governorship, institutes, nongovernmental organizations, foundations, associations, professional groups in different disciplines and representatives of sectors.

During the workshop, 6 thematic topics were examined according to the principles of ‘Sendai Framework Plan’, which was also taken into account by the United Nations Center for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) (Disaster Risk Management; Emergency Management; Disaster Risk Analysis; Disaster Risk Financing Capacity Development/ Disaster economics; Urban/Spatial Planning, Design, Renewal, Development; Protection of Ecosystem and Natural Resources and Climate Change Adaptation) were discussed. In the panel sessions performed on the first day; The current situation, developments in the international field and the scientific framework regarding the determined themes were presented, and problems, solution offer and projects related to the earthquake were discussed in around tables on the second day.
